A Deadly Serious Game in Two Acts

The middle aged Andrew Wyke, a successful author of English country house murder mysteries, is an obsessive player of games, games of deductive logic, inductive logic, semantics, mathematics, hypnosis, and prestidigitation. Milo Tindle, the young lover of Andrew's wife Marguerite, has cautiously accepted an invitation by Andrew to his house.
Anthony Shaffer's play Sleuth opened to rave reviews in London in February, 1970, with Anthony Quayle and Keith Baxter in the lead roles. In the film production by Palomar Pictures Production and Twentieth Century Fox the roles of Andrew Wyke and Milo Tindle were played by Laurence Olivier and Michael Caine.
Sleuth makes fascinating reading on several levels. The setting, an English country home, initially suggests a predictable English mystery. However, despite some elements of humor, the disguised rivalry between Wyke and Tindle gradually develops overtones of a psychological thriller. Like Tindle, the reader is uncertain whether Wyke is simply playing a game, or whether he has more serious intentions. Obsessive game playing and make believe appear to be metamorphosing into a dangerous reality, but who is the victim? The plot is highly unpredictable and it would be inappropriate to say more.
The dialogue is fast paced and witty. Sleuth is entertaining, suspenseful, and great fun.

At once odd and familiar, a great recommendation.

The one extremely odd thing about this play was the fact that it was more of an entertainment than anything else, which is something that the old, stodgy theater would highly frown upon. Actually, though, it comes across as more of a breath of fresh air in a profession which is breathing its last in the public eye. The story twists and weaves almost too much to keep track of, but ostensibly this is the story of a young foreign gentleman in England who is visiting an older native. The older man has called him over to talk about a concern. The younger man (Milo)is getting married, and it turns out that the woman in question is the older man's ex-fiancee. What starts out as a polite inquiry into the Milo's finances suddenly turns ugly, as his elder intends to scare him. The two become embroiled in a psychological battle of scares and pranks up until the unexpected ending of the play. The key words here are Reversal of Expectation, taken almost to ludicrous extremes but always clear and understandable. The dialogue is quick, clever, and entertaining, and the characters are memorable. Best of all, this play can be performed easily on a budget and with a limited cast and crew; the script is that undemanding. The only thing you should consider bringing to the table here is an experienced director and two very talented actors.

Wicked Fun!

For my money, playwriting is probably the most difficult writing there is.

Unlike a book, you don't have the luxury of being able to use a lot of words or a lot of time and yet somehow in the scant pages allowed to you, you're expected to:

1) Introduce the characters

2) Introduce the story

3) Move both along consistently and

4) Bring about a satisfying ending while providing entertaining dialogue with no wasted scenes.

It's a huge order and yet Anthony Shaffer delivers. In this story we meet Andrew Wyke a stodgy Britisher who's wife is having an affair with the other character, Milo. Unlike Wyke Milo is young and verile. He's dashing and bigger than life but shorter on brains.

Or is it that we only think he's shorter on brains.

As Shaffer develops the story he naturally develops the plot and his characters in a way that we find both satisfying and believable.

It's wicked fun and well worth reading or seeing.

About the Author
Bill Griffiths (1948-2007) was born in Middlesex. He began writing poetry and publishing in 1970, benefitting from the guidance of Eric Mottram, Bob Cobbing, and many others on the little press scene. He went on to study Old English at King's College, London, obtaining a PhD in 1987. He was Visiting Fellow at the Centre for Northern Studies, Northumbria University in Newcastle upon Tyne and lived in Seaham, County Durham. He died on 13 September 2007.

Worth the extra ordering time

While Anglo-Saxon poetry is not normaly thought of as "Page-Turning", this poem is not bad. I recomend this text, well, because it contains the poem (I suspect that you are not reading the poem for fun). If you are looking for something beutiful to put on your bookshelf, maybe a differant text would be better. The plain white cover is pretty bland. I recomend the poem to anyone interested in Anglo-Saxon litterature.

About the Author
Gordon Hooper's Biography Gordon L Hooper was born on August 25, 1927, in a two room adobe house, in Lovington, New Mexico. His parents, Marven and Emma (Love) Hooper were the children of homesteaders who settled land in northeastern Lea County, New Mexico in the early 1900's. When Gordon was 14 months old, his father hired out to be a ranch foreman for "Uncle" John Scharbauer and Millard Eidson, and on October 1, 1930 they moved Marven's family to their 50 section ranch at Judkins, Texas in southwest Ector County. In the summer of 1937, Gordon's father established his own business "Hooper's Clay", and the family of four including a baby girl (Marvelee) moved to Goldsmith, Texas. In the summer of 1943, the family of five which now had a 2nd son (Sammy) moved to Kermit, Texas for one year. In 1944, Gordon's family moved back to the Scharbauer and Eidson ranch at Judkins, Texas. Gordon was 15 years old and was a sophomore at Odessa High. When school began in the fall of that year, Gordon didn't know it, but from that time forward his education would be twofold. When a "ranch kid" gets home from school, he changes his clothes and helps with the ranch chores which include Saturdays and Sundays. After Gordon graduated from Odessa High in 1947, he worked full time on the ranch for two years. The work included breaking young horses raised on the ranch; during the hard winters he was responsible for feeding the cattle using a team of mules to pull the wagon filled with feed. The Hooper family moved to Crane County, Texas in 1949 and established the Ranch House Grocery on Highway 1233. Gordon married Nita Rhodes on March 17, 1950 and to this union was born four children; Danny, Steve, Judy, and Paul. During the Korean War, Gordon served in the United States Air Force located at the Amarillo Air Force Base. He was an instructor of jet mechanics on the B-47 Bomber. Early Crane well presented

Gordon did an excellent job of doing what he set out to do: show Crane County residents the ranching life and ranchers before the oil boom. He did excellent research and advanced the knowledge of early Crane a great deal.

About the Author
Matthias Otto is Professor of Analytical Chemistry at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg in Germany. He was born in Dresden (Germany) and did all his studies at the University of Leipzig. In 1984 he moved to Freiberg (Germany) as a lecturer and was appointed full Professor there in 1987. Since that time he has taught almost all aspects of Analytical Chemistry mainly within the curricula of chemistry, applied sciences and geoecology and organizes courses in basic and advanced chemometrics. He is author and editor of successful textbooks in analytical chemistry.

Seems to have a good amount of information

Seems to have a good amount of information; however, it can be a little hard to understand at times. When I was new to chemometrics it confused me a good amount, especially with my limitied stats/math background. Now after being in the field for a little bit, it is a good book to refer back to

Informative but broad

An informative book that covers a wide range of topics in chemometrics. About a third of the book deals with statistics, giving a good review to signal processing, ANOVA, t-tests, etc. For someone that wanted a book dealing only with chemometrics, it is disappointing to find a big portion of the book dedicated to basic statistics. A lot of topics are covered but not all in much detail. For example, there are 3 pages on SIMCA, 4 pages on PCR and PLS. There are more details when you get into the sections on neural networks and fuzzy theory. The examples are OK but not always easy to follow if you are not familiar with a particular method because steps are skipped. This book is a great overview of chemometrics-useful to refresh memories or get new ideas for data treatment- but needs to be supplemented with additional resources to learn more any one particular method. Fortunately the author includes a "general reading" section at the end of each chapter which provides references for books with more details.
