passionate and emotionally captivating

Rebecca ‘Becki’ James comes by her hell raising reputation fairly, but ever since the accident that claimed the life of Dane, her partner, she’s finding it difficult to move on. The biggest trouble is that there are huge chunks of her memory that are missing and until she can recover those moments there’s no way she can perform the sort of rescues she’s renowned for – especially since the thought of even climbing a rock wall is enough to send her into a sweat.
Marcus Landers has his own issues to face. Permanently injured during a mission he returned to Baff, Alberta and formed his own rescue team – and they’re the best at what they do, but Marcus has allowed his injury to keep him from truly being a part of the Lifeline team. All his focus has been on making sure his team is the best of the best but when Becki reemerges in his life Marcus realizes that the spark that ignited between them seven years ago is still there.
Becki has returned to the school where she trained to perform high–risk rescue missions to help with the next batch of students but classes are still a ways off and Marcus has requested that she help whip his Lifeline team into shape. That’s not all Marcus wants either… he well remembers how her devil-may-care carried over into the bedroom. The discovery that their renewed relationship seems to be helping her recover from the past is just a bonus.
From the very first page the reader is sucked into the adrenaline fueled lifestyle of a search and rescue team member. Becki might not be a member of the team but her passion for the job is obvious from the get-go even if she is troubled by the accident that changed her life. Marcus matches her perfectly in passion and temperament and some of their face offs and work out sessions are hot enough to make readers sweat. At the same time they’re so endearingly sweet that you just can’t help but love everything about this book. Vivian Arend’s writing is passionate and emotionally captivating and HIGH RISK is the perfect example of exactly why her books are finding their way onto bookshelves of romance readers everywhere.
HIGH RISK is the first book in Ms. Arend’s ADRENALINE series. I’m now anxiously awaiting Alisha and Devon’s story, HIGH PASSION, the tension between the two of them is almost palatable and I’m dying to find out what happens.

Spicy romance

This was a romantic/action type story with quite explicit sex scenes that bordered on a little kinky for me. The h/h are former lovers who are reunited as intructors of rescue teams at a school owned by the male character and his brother. Both main characters have been through trauma-he lost part of his arm and she lost her most recent lover in a climbing accident that she can't remember. I had a hard time getting into this book not a lot happening other than revisiting past traumas and the two main characters getting together again. This is the start of a series and the set ups for the future books look promising. There was nothing wrong with this book, I would characterize it as a book that I would read when I had nothing else available to pass the time, it was literally just "OK".

Great start to a new series

From the Granite Lake Wolves to the Six Pack Ranch, Vivian Arend has kept us entertained and wanting more. Now she takes us into the lives of SAR and the team of Lifeline. Adrenaline junkies, hot males and women who not only hold their own but live their lives to the fullest while doing it!
Becki has to get her life together. After losing her partner in a climbing accident, she has lost faith in herself, her abilities and her life in general. She can't remember the accident; she has no idea how Dane died; she doesn't remember saving the girls from the mountain that made her a celebrity and has her hounded by journalists. She has nightmares that loop and loop but never bring her to the end - she really cannot remember what happened that fateful day in the mountains. Maybe it's time to get back to her roots and remember what it was that made her the top SAR; remember the rules that were taught to her seven years ago by Marcus. She accepts a teaching position offered by David Landers and heads back to her beginnings hoping that she eventually remembers and can face a mountainside again.
Marcus Landers lost part of his arm in a freak accident. He suffers through the pain, he has black-outs ... days that he can't remember anything. Unable to climb anymore, he starts the top-rated SAR team of "Lifeline". Only the best and brightest make his team. After a highly-publicized rescue, the team has become lax, cocky. It's time to shake them up and get them back on the right track. After David tells him that he's hired Becki, he decides on a course of action. Who better than to get his team back into shape than the person who is the top SAR in the North; the person that set all the school records; the dare-devil that climbed the outside of the Banff Springs Hotel on a dare her first year in SAR school. His Becki - the woman he still couldn't get out of his mind.
There are several twists and turns in "High Risk" that have the reader wondering what really did happen. Not only with Becki and Dane but with Marcus' accident. When the truth is finally revealed, you know that Becki and Marcus belong together and that fate had a crazy way of doing things. You cheer when Becki finally overcomes her fears and Marcus is there with her to not only cheer her on but support her through her darkest moments.
So, what did I get from this book besides falling in lust with another hot, alpha male of Vivian Arend's imagination? Well, it made me realize that "faith" runs both ways - you have to trust in order to be trusted. You have to have faith that you will find the way through the darkness to enjoy the brilliance of the sun. You can be independent but still rely on the people around you to hold you up. Your friend and mentor can also be the love of you life and the people that surround both you and him will not only accept this but embrace it with open arms.
Marcus and Becki were two of a kind. Kindred spirits that found each other again when they both needed it most. Comforted each other, drove away the demons that haunted them. They were made for each other and will have a happily-ever-after that spans throughout the rest of the series.
