There being few customer comments on this book so far, perhaps my thoughts can help other potential buyers (and readers).

I read a review of this book in the Wall Street Journal. I couldn't sample it online, and so bought it on faith, with a hope that it would be educational and enjoyable. I was not disappointed.

I've read several books on rhetoric, and I was familiar with some of the the devices described in this book. Where it excels is in having many examples of rhetoric in action. The author's commentary is concise and quite helpful.

I actually fell in love with this book from reading the introduction - a fine piece of writing on its own.

I read this book with colored pencils in hand, and I'm sure I'll refer to it in the future.

A brilliant book about a double-edged sword

You know, I'm an English major, and I was NEVER treated to a course on Rhetoric. Later on, I was a law student for a short time, and there was no course on Rhetoric.

Why? For centuries, Rhetoric was one of the main subjects students paid to study. Why did they pay? Because it would help them to win debates and arguments. As critics have complained for centuries, the art of Rhetoric can be (and has been) twisted into making the worse appear the better cause.

But, like the two-edged sword it is, Rhetoric can make the better cause appear the only cause, and the best cause. Look to Churchill's war-time speeches, or to Lincoln's unforgettable "...that the government of the people, by the people, and for the people, shall not perish from the earth." You could paraphrase that, perhaps, as "the republican system of government must survive" --- and it's instantly forgettable.

Rhetoric is the ancient and very effective way to make your words STICK in the minds of other people. If you're at all curious about this subject, you probably want to read this book.

"If there remains in you a drop of curiosity, one drop of that quest for knowledge which makes great men stand out from their fellows, if there remains in you even the slightest glimmer of interest in learning how to speak and persuade others, I suggest that the solution is evident." :-) Jazzed it up a little, didn't I?

This is the companion to the book and each chapter is coordinated with it. It has a lot of room to write your responses to the questions asked and helps you really ponder how you feel about your life. Anyone wanting to actually write your feelings, which I would recommend as you read the book (otherwise you won't get the full benefit), will find the workbook exercises of great benefit. I gave it 5 stars because it is very thorough and very helpful. It forces you to really think about how you feel and get it down on paper.

Since the publication of the first edition in 1986, there have been many technical advances such as cochlea implants, bone anchored hearing aids, oto-acoustic emissions and magnetic resonance imaging. There has also been considerable change in attitude to the psychosocial aspects of vertigo and tinnitus with an increasing emphasis on counselling. Hearing aids have become much smaller and have a greater range of acoustic options. Real ear measures of hearing aid gain greatly increase the ability to tailor this to the pure tone audiogram, and computerized methods are available to estimate likely benefit. This edition discusses these changes in practice. Chapters on paediatric otology have been added.

About the Author
James Hadley Chase has been hailed as 'the thriller maestro of the generation', 'the king of all thriller writers' and a 'master of the art of his deception'. During his life, he wrote some eighty titles, each one thrilling and delighting his readers with their fast-moving tales of murder, intrigue, blackmail and espionage. Hadley Chase was born René Brabazon Raymond and he also wrote under the names of James L Dochery, Ambrose Grant and Raymond Marshall. He was born René Brabazon Raymond in London in 1906. Whilst working as a bookseller he was inspired by American crime-writers and went on to write his own thrillers and gangster stories, also set in the United States. Success came with No Orchids for Miss Blandish which was published in 1939 and was one of the most successful books of the thirties, selling several million copies. George Orwell described it as 'a brilliant piece of writing with hardly a wasted word or a jarring note anywhere'. It was subsequently dramatised and performed on London's West End, and also made into a film. Chase went on to gain popularity for his numerous other gangster stories, and by the end of the war he was one of Britain's most successful thriller writers. During his career he travelled widely and produced some ninety books, also writing under the names of James L Dochery, Ambrose Grant and Raymond Marshall, although ironically he only visited the USA late in life, relying previously upon knowledge gleaned from dictionaries of slang and encyclopedias for the novels set there. His interests included photography (he was up to professional standard), reading and listening to classical music, being a particularly enthusiastic opera lover.

Strange and terrifying

MORE DEADLY THAN THE MALE ****, 1946

A strange character, unusual... George Fraser is a big guy, with large shoulders but very shy. He lives alone, very alone, his only companion is a cat, timid and wild, like him, maybe his reincarnated soul.

George is selling children encyclopediae, a little job which allows him to survive. With a good training and a lot of work, he manages to develop his sales talk with some skill.

At night he escapes from his lonelyness dreaming he is a tough american gangster : Al Capone and Dillinger are afraid of him...

This frenzy is turning into sheer mythomania : he tells his exploits to the house maid who is a good listener...

But this little narrow world is going to change !

George has got the mission to train a new recruit. The young man is in fact a very tough boy who is hiding... For the matter of selling children encyclopediae he learns fast, he has a natural talent, he is a born salesman with no scruples. Very soon, he drags George on a very bad slope... him and his sister, another Chase heroine as we like them ! Cora is a young tigress who is been afraid of nobody, she is living like an animal : beautiful, savage, wanton and very filthy.

George is in love and blinded like a big insect who burns his wings to a street light. He is manipulated and crushed... until the day when Cora has killed his cat.

This novel is a terrifying trip in the London suburbs, which has something reminding of the well known classic "Les mystères de Paris" (Eugène Sue).

And this door to door job was the first job of James, so we are given an intensive course of salesmanship, with all the bad tricks. What a lesson ! All commercial manuals are beaten.

But George Fraser boasts to the wrong people and suddenly his dream world becomes all too real. But he has exciting dreams. In his dreams, he lives in a thrilling world of gangsters, guns, fast cars and beautiful women. And of course, in his dreams, he is the toughest gangster of them all. Obviously, when a dream comes true, the dreamer is expected to be happy, but tragically, Fraser has to be worried and sad for his dreams coming to limelight because he never knew things could turn sore even as a gangster living in a gangster paradise; he forgot to ask Coolio before consult chase for his dreams. It is an intelligent and harshly revealing piece of work with not a little serious penetration and power.

What a fantastic quick read and beginning of a new series!! You have four ex-Army Rangers who have served together overseas and come home for some terminal leave (R&R) before their time in the service comes to an end.
This first story in the series is about Eva & Bowie. Eva served with the same company in Afghanistan as Bowie and his friends. They were both physically drawn to the other even then, but each knew they couldn’t take it anywhere while serving in the middle of a war zone. But as far as Bowie is concerned, all bets are off now that she’s a civilian & he’s on his way to being one. But Eva is bound and determined not to end up like her mother … missing out on her life-long ambition of a career. And careers and climbing the promotion ladder don’t leave time for having a mate.
However, Bowie’s lion & Eva’s jaguar know what the score is – they are mates! The resulting pursuit is hot and steady! This is a grown-up read with all the sexiness and steamy situations anyone would enjoy.
As usual, Tabitha Conall gives us a great read, with plenty of back story and character development, for a most entertaining series. Her writing style and clean editing make an exceptionally enjoyable reading experience!

HOLY SHIFT! There is NOTHING MINOR about this story!! What a FURRIFICLY ROAR of a read!! I thoroughly & immensely enjoyed it! I always want my stories to be longer, regardless of how long they are but I don't know if I could have survived this one if there was more to it! Tabitha sure has a way with words which is one of the many, MANY reasons that I love her books, and this one is no exception! She has packed so much into this one short story so that every little part of it is entertaining, which sometimes in a short story, there isn’t room for everything and for it to fit well. Tabitha is able to not only make it entertaining, but she also does it in such a way that you don’t even realize that is was a short story! I quickly fell for Bowie and loved that the story was more “his” story. It seemed to add another dimension to the reading pleasure. I loved the humor! So many times I giggled, snickered, snorting or chuckled! Take this for example: Somewhere in the back of his mind he realized he was being completely irrational, but that little voice was so small he could barely hear it. Now THAT was a “snort” moment! To me, that says a lot about how gifted Tabitha is! Not every author can write a story that is as enjoyable, as engrossing and as rich as this one is, never mind if it is a short story or a full length novel! Too many times with the short stories I am left wondering what the whole point was or why I bothered even reading it! But not this one!! Tabitha has truly amazed, wowed and impressed me with A Minor Shift and with just how PUUURRFECTLY PAWESOME it is!! I cannot wait to read the rest of this series! Tabitha has me totally cativated and that's no lion!! (Did you see that cover! Talk about drool-worthy!)

JUST A COUPLE OF UNDERDEVELOPED CHAPTERS THAT DID NOT ENTICE ME

I realize that this is a extremely short introduction to the main characters in order to entice the reader to follow this series but it really failed with me, because:
There was nothing to draw me to care about the characters as they were merely introduced rather than developed.
There was no real heat, no build up of suspense, or of world building, just -
My mate
She's scare that mating will interfere with her FBI job
We'll make it work - let's have sex and mark each other
Oh by the way - I have to get my mother out of a bad place
The end - to be continued

That was it. While there was no misspellings or wrong word usage, there was also no development of characters, the world they live in, or the plot. More of a very bare outline of a story. While the author maybe capable of writing, I am very leery that she can write a fully developed series. It would have been more convincing if she had spent more time developing the characters and setting up the suspense in the 1st book in the series to entice the reader to keep returning to find out more about what happens to them. As it stands now - I don't care about the characters or if they ever get their HEA. This came off as more of a couple of underdeveloped first few chapters that I fear are going to continue with more underdeveloped chapters.
