Jerry Mike (The Dagger) Sage

I served in Korea with "The Dagger" in 1954. He was the Battalion Commander of the First Battalion of The 5th Regimental Combat Team and I was the Battalion Operations Specialist in the same unit. I lost all contact since 1952 until I learned he had written this book. I only knew then that he had served in the OSS, that he wore a Solingen dagger. It was really good to play catch up on him. I only wish he were still alive. His contribution to the Green Berets was large. The funniest thing is that he was serving with the Green Berets in Bad Toelz, Germany when I was working in the same area teaching spooks to do the same kind of work that he did in Africa. How do I rate the book? Excellent, but then I am probably just a little bit prejudiced. It is a great read for enthusiasts of books of this genre.

Combines Adventure and Factual History

Sage describes his actions as a commando in the African theater in World War II, his subsequent imprisonment, and his escape activities. Sage consistently accepted challenges boldly, with considerable courage and cleverness. For example, when a German civilian demanded that he shows his identification papers (while he was on the lam after an escape), he coolly said: "Not for you!" When a German woman began a conversation with him that exceeded his limited German skills, he faked deafness and made a gesture indicating that a bomb blast had deafened him. The ruse worked.

While in Stalag Luft III, Sage worked as a stooge and penguin. He set up numerous diversions. When the garden in which the sand was dumped grew noticeably higher than the surrounding soil, he deftly disguised this by placing a row of stones around the garden. When a suspicious German would not leave the area, Sage made a deliberately silly request for white paint for the rocks "in order to beautify the Third Reich." Predictably, the goon walked away in disgust.

Throughout this book, Sage emphasizes his strong Christian faith. While in solitary confinement, he often recounted Scriptures from memory. Sage also experienced numerous answered prayers, some of which were spectacular. For example, when being surrounded by a dog-wielding posse during one of his escapes, he prayed for a swamp in which he could submerge himself and breathe through a straw (based on a movie he had previously seen). He fully realized that there were no swamps in that part of Germany. But he prayed, and his prayer was answered almost immediately. He came upon a body of water in which he could hide, and he did so successfully.

Sage also recounts his experiences in war-torn Poland, providing details seldom seen in the writings of non-Polish authors. Sage saw the ruins of Warsaw caused by vindictive Germans following the Warsaw Uprising, whose doom had been guaranteed by the deliberate 6-month pause of the Soviet armies at the gates of Warsaw. Sage also saw firsthand and described the forced installation of the Communist puppet regime upon Poland that occurred just as soon as the Germans had been driven out--all the result of the sellout of Poland by the USA and Britain in the events up to and including the Yalta Conference. He personally protected a group of Polish women from being raped by Russian soldiers. He saw firsthand the widespread robbery of Poles by the Russians. They took whatever of value that the Germans had not taken first. He described the Poles as very generous, as they shared things with Sage and his men even though they had very little left after the German and now Russian occupations of Poland.

The autobiography of an American hero

Jerry Sage was one of the original members of the OSS, the pre-World War II military intelligence agency which eventually became the CIA. After America's entry into the war, Sage was captured by the Germans in North Africa (he convinced the Nazis he was actually a paratrooper--otherwise they would have shot him on the spot) and was sent to a prison camp within Germany istelf. He escaped from the camp numerous times, and aided British officers in staging the famous "Great Escape" (the Steve McQueen character in the film about that escape was based on none other than Jerry Sage).
His autobiography is a riveting account of the long years in (and occasionally out of) German captivity--and goes on to describe the even more facinating life that Sage lived after the war, working covertly behind the Iron Curtain to subvert yet another savage dictatorship.
"Sage" is difficult to find today, but it's worth the search. For those who were unlucky enough to never have met Jerry Sage, who died a few years ago, it is an unforgettable history lesson, told by a genuine American hero.
For me, it's all that... plus a reminder of a brave man whom I was proud to call a friend.

Save your money

I had problems with concentration due to many factors (environment, no regular sleeping timing ... etc). Once I saw the title I told my self 'there may be a solution or something pointing in that direction'

To keep it short I advice anybody to "Save your money, This is beyond the last place to waste it"

Reasons:
- The book is a Facsimile of 1923 ed edition. The size of the text is at most only third of the page space.
- It has 112 pages only 30 are about the subject. while the remaining 82 pages are related to some bizarre religious/movements drawings
- There is little (if none )of actual value about how to concentrate: read other self-help books or articles on the net and you'll find more ideas,tips and tricks for such title (Google is your friend).

If there was such as Zero stars or Block this book. but the least thing is 1 star.

A Deadly Serious Game in Two Acts

The middle aged Andrew Wyke, a successful author of English country house murder mysteries, is an obsessive player of games, games of deductive logic, inductive logic, semantics, mathematics, hypnosis, and prestidigitation. Milo Tindle, the young lover of Andrew's wife Marguerite, has cautiously accepted an invitation by Andrew to his house.
Anthony Shaffer's play Sleuth opened to rave reviews in London in February, 1970, with Anthony Quayle and Keith Baxter in the lead roles. In the film production by Palomar Pictures Production and Twentieth Century Fox the roles of Andrew Wyke and Milo Tindle were played by Laurence Olivier and Michael Caine.
Sleuth makes fascinating reading on several levels. The setting, an English country home, initially suggests a predictable English mystery. However, despite some elements of humor, the disguised rivalry between Wyke and Tindle gradually develops overtones of a psychological thriller. Like Tindle, the reader is uncertain whether Wyke is simply playing a game, or whether he has more serious intentions. Obsessive game playing and make believe appear to be metamorphosing into a dangerous reality, but who is the victim? The plot is highly unpredictable and it would be inappropriate to say more.
The dialogue is fast paced and witty. Sleuth is entertaining, suspenseful, and great fun.

At once odd and familiar, a great recommendation.

The one extremely odd thing about this play was the fact that it was more of an entertainment than anything else, which is something that the old, stodgy theater would highly frown upon. Actually, though, it comes across as more of a breath of fresh air in a profession which is breathing its last in the public eye. The story twists and weaves almost too much to keep track of, but ostensibly this is the story of a young foreign gentleman in England who is visiting an older native. The older man has called him over to talk about a concern. The younger man (Milo)is getting married, and it turns out that the woman in question is the older man's ex-fiancee. What starts out as a polite inquiry into the Milo's finances suddenly turns ugly, as his elder intends to scare him. The two become embroiled in a psychological battle of scares and pranks up until the unexpected ending of the play. The key words here are Reversal of Expectation, taken almost to ludicrous extremes but always clear and understandable. The dialogue is quick, clever, and entertaining, and the characters are memorable. Best of all, this play can be performed easily on a budget and with a limited cast and crew; the script is that undemanding. The only thing you should consider bringing to the table here is an experienced director and two very talented actors.

Wicked Fun!

For my money, playwriting is probably the most difficult writing there is.

Unlike a book, you don't have the luxury of being able to use a lot of words or a lot of time and yet somehow in the scant pages allowed to you, you're expected to:

1) Introduce the characters

2) Introduce the story

3) Move both along consistently and

4) Bring about a satisfying ending while providing entertaining dialogue with no wasted scenes.

It's a huge order and yet Anthony Shaffer delivers. In this story we meet Andrew Wyke a stodgy Britisher who's wife is having an affair with the other character, Milo. Unlike Wyke Milo is young and verile. He's dashing and bigger than life but shorter on brains.

Or is it that we only think he's shorter on brains.

As Shaffer develops the story he naturally develops the plot and his characters in a way that we find both satisfying and believable.

It's wicked fun and well worth reading or seeing.

About the Author
Bill Griffiths (1948-2007) was born in Middlesex. He began writing poetry and publishing in 1970, benefitting from the guidance of Eric Mottram, Bob Cobbing, and many others on the little press scene. He went on to study Old English at King's College, London, obtaining a PhD in 1987. He was Visiting Fellow at the Centre for Northern Studies, Northumbria University in Newcastle upon Tyne and lived in Seaham, County Durham. He died on 13 September 2007.

Worth the extra ordering time

While Anglo-Saxon poetry is not normaly thought of as "Page-Turning", this poem is not bad. I recomend this text, well, because it contains the poem (I suspect that you are not reading the poem for fun). If you are looking for something beutiful to put on your bookshelf, maybe a differant text would be better. The plain white cover is pretty bland. I recomend the poem to anyone interested in Anglo-Saxon litterature.

Gordon Hooper's Biography Gordon L Hooper was born on August 25, 1927, in a two room adobe house, in Lovington, New Mexico. His parents, Marven and Emma (Love) Hooper were the children of homesteaders who settled land in northeastern Lea County, New Mexico in the early 1900's. When Gordon was 14 months old, his father hired out to be a ranch foreman for "Uncle" John Scharbauer and Millard Eidson, and on October 1, 1930 they moved Marven's family to their 50 section ranch at Judkins, Texas in southwest Ector County. In the summer of 1937, Gordon's father established his own business "Hooper's Clay", and the family of four including a baby girl (Marvelee) moved to Goldsmith, Texas. In the summer of 1943, the family of five which now had a 2nd son (Sammy) moved to Kermit, Texas for one year. In 1944, Gordon's family moved back to the Scharbauer and Eidson ranch at Judkins, Texas. Gordon was 15 years old and was a sophomore at Odessa High. When school began in the fall of that year, Gordon didn't know it, but from that time forward his education would be twofold. When a "ranch kid" gets home from school, he changes his clothes and helps with the ranch chores which include Saturdays and Sundays. After Gordon graduated from Odessa High in 1947, he worked full time on the ranch for two years. The work included breaking young horses raised on the ranch; during the hard winters he was responsible for feeding the cattle using a team of mules to pull the wagon filled with feed. The Hooper family moved to Crane County, Texas in 1949 and established the Ranch House Grocery on Highway 1233. Gordon married Nita Rhodes on March 17, 1950 and to this union was born four children; Danny, Steve, Judy, and Paul. During the Korean War, Gordon served in the United States Air Force located at the Amarillo Air Force Base. He was an instructor of jet mechanics on the B-47 Bomber. Gordon did an excellent job of doing what he set out to do: show Crane County residents the ranching life and ranchers before the oil boom. He did excellent research and advanced the knowledge of early Crane a great deal.

About the Author
Matthias Otto is Professor of Analytical Chemistry at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg in Germany. He was born in Dresden (Germany) and did all his studies at the University of Leipzig. In 1984 he moved to Freiberg (Germany) as a lecturer and was appointed full Professor there in 1987. Since that time he has taught almost all aspects of Analytical Chemistry mainly within the curricula of chemistry, applied sciences and geoecology and organizes courses in basic and advanced chemometrics. He is author and editor of successful textbooks in analytical chemistry.

Seems to have a good amount of information

Seems to have a good amount of information; however, it can be a little hard to understand at times. When I was new to chemometrics it confused me a good amount, especially with my limitied stats/math background. Now after being in the field for a little bit, it is a good book to refer back to

Informative but broad

An informative book that covers a wide range of topics in chemometrics. About a third of the book deals with statistics, giving a good review to signal processing, ANOVA, t-tests, etc. For someone that wanted a book dealing only with chemometrics, it is disappointing to find a big portion of the book dedicated to basic statistics. A lot of topics are covered but not all in much detail. For example, there are 3 pages on SIMCA, 4 pages on PCR and PLS. There are more details when you get into the sections on neural networks and fuzzy theory. The examples are OK but not always easy to follow if you are not familiar with a particular method because steps are skipped. This book is a great overview of chemometrics-useful to refresh memories or get new ideas for data treatment- but needs to be supplemented with additional resources to learn more any one particular method. Fortunately the author includes a "general reading" section at the end of each chapter which provides references for books with more details.

About the Author
Gay Su Pinnell is a professor in the School of Teaching and Learning at The Ohio State University. She has extensive experience in classroom teaching and field-based research, and in developing comprehensive approaches to literacy education. She has received the International Reading Association's Albert J. Harris Award for research and the Charles A. Dana Foundation Award for her contributions to the field of education. She is also a member of the Reading Hall of Fame. Together with Irene Fountas she has authored numerous books, videos, and websites with Heinemann that are considered standards in the field of literacy instruction and staff development. Their latest innovations are The Fountas & Pinnell Leveled Literacy Intervention and The Fountas & Pinnell Benchmark Assessment System, a comprehensive assessment system for grades K-8. Irene C. Fountas, a professor in the School of Education at Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, has been a classroom teacher, language arts specialist, and consultant in school districts across the nation and abroad. She works extensively in the literacy education field and directs the Literacy Collaborative in the School of Education at Lesley University. Fountas and Pinnell are two of the most recognized experts of early literacy learning and teaching in the US. Literacy Beginnings reads like a prequel to all their previous books; if you are a stakeholder in early childhood education- teacher or administrator- this book is a must read. The early childhood community has long been awaiting these gurus to weigh in on the heavily debated and often misinterpreted best practices in early literacy instruction. This book will leave many early childhood teachers feeling triumphant as the authors openly denounce the outdated "Letter of the Week" method as well as worksheets. Reading this book one can almost hear early childhood educators around the world shouting words of joy as they realize the impact it will have on future generations of teachers and students.

Literacy Beginnings is not about math, science, open-ended art, or music and movement- it is about best practices in early literacy instruction for the 21st Century. If you have a problem with the plumbing in your house you call a plumber, you don't call a general handyman. The same goes for this book, if you are looking for the most current, research based information on early literacy instruction from a reliable and trusted source then this is the book for you.

Firm up your knowledge of "Beginning Literacy"

The name of the authors is why I initially decided to pay $40 for this book. I should say upfront I am glad I did not wait for used copies to become available. I had next step questions & assessment questions I hoped reading over the summer would clear up to strengthen my know-how the for next school year. I reflected on my observations, lesson plan notes and pictures from last school year and Literacy Beginnings provides "hooks" that took my thinking to the next level. The authors being former classroom teachers anticipated those questions that come up when teachers plan and included them in the chapters. Since I was not with my teaching team, I read the questions in the chapters and spoke into a tape recorder or jotted down my response. When I returned to the material I was able to connect what I knew to what I wanted to know with the chapter titles, pictures of children and examples of work done by the children. The first chapter is basic but necessary to make sure I was on the same page in terms of theory and what it looks like in a busy classroom. I hope this review helps another teacher. I am new at this. I have worked in pre-k for 6 years and I was sort of shaky about why I did certain things with certain kids if I did not make a note. This resource helps me feel good about last semester and gives me firm steps to take me into next year.

Handbook for Needed Help

As an Early Childhood Special Education professional, I now consult with and provide professional development for Early Childhood professionals in public school and community based programs. SCRIBBLE SCRABBLE: BECAUSE PREWRITING IS LITERACY, TOO and HIGGELTY PIGGELTY BUMBLE BEE, WON'T YOU LEARN YOUR NAME WITH ME have been growing topics in recent years. There have been scant publications with strong, experiential examples and suggestions, especially regarding beginning recognizing of one's name and name writing. During my last workshop, the first since acquiring this book, the book was sent around the room for each to examine. They loved it!!!!! The teachers were enthusiastic about the information I shared from the text and their personal book examination. Many left saying they'd go back to their sites to ask that this be bought for them. Thank you, authors Fountas and Pinnell, you have filled a long standing void in our field.
