This book, which accompanied an exhibition at the Barbican Gallery ,London, examines the contribution of artist-witnesses and survivors of the Holocaust to post-war culture, music, literature, theatre and the visual arts.

A selection of the graphic works produced in internment, in ghettos, transit and concentration camps between 1939 and 1945 makes up the exhibition's core. The majority of these come from collections in Eastern Europe and Israel.

These works are considered alongside artistic precursors and contemporary sources, principally from major collections in the European Community. The book and exhibition seek to re-establish the legitimacy of these works within the narratives of 20th century art history and the expanding field of Holocaust studies. The post-war achievements of a number of artist-survivors is also discussed.

Surprisingly, for art produced in the absence of all contacts with the outside world, the art of internment reveals an unusual awareness of visual and iconographic sources and provides a point of entry to a discussion of representational strategies and artistic intention. The discussion leads into a comparison of the drawings with personal testimonies and works of literature, combining original archival research with extensive use of secondary sources.

About the Author
Glenn Sujo is an artist with a specialist interest in the continuity of drawing traditions. He studied at the Slade School of Fine Art and the Courtauld Institute of Art, University of London, and has lectured extensively, most recently at the Bezalel Academy of Art in Israel. His works have been acquired by, among others, the British Museum, London; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Israel Museum, Jerusalem; and Museo de Bellas Artes, Caracas.

This book of art was published in conjunction with the 'Legacies of Silence Exhibition' at the Imperial War Museum, London in the Fall of 2001. The book stands as a silent witness to the horrors of war with its many sketches, paintings & related artworks largely rendered during the period 1939 - 1945. The author is both an artist & curator, & this compilation of Holocaust artforms is extraordinarily well-executed with intuitive & informative running commentary & choice selection of quality material from well-known artists (Jankel Adler, Marc Chagall, Paul Klee, Borist Taslitz, etc.) and many less well-known artists too numberous to cite.

The prose, reproduction quality of the artwork & the books binding are first class. The reproductions & the author's analyses of artist's intents in conveyance of Holocaustic terrorism requires careful study, meditation & musing. This is an important book, but the targeted audience will be small.

About the Author

Richard and Jo Anne Vacca are professors emeriti in the Department of Teaching, Leadership, and Curriculum

Studies in the College and Graduate School of Education, Health, and Human Services at Kent State University. They met as undergraduate English majors at SUNY–Albany and have been partners ever since. Jo Anne taught middle school language arts in New York and Illinois and received her doctorate from Boston University. Rich taught high school English and earned his doctorate at Syracuse University. He is a past president of the International Reading Association. The Vacca's live in Vero Beach, Florida, where they golf, volunteer, and walk their toy poodles, Tiger Lily and Gigi Marie. They especially enjoy visiting and traveling with their daughter, Courtney; son-in-law, Gary; and grandsons, Simon, Max, and Joe.

 

Maryann Mraz is an associate professor in the Reading and Elementary Education Department of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNCC). She earned her Ph.D . from Kent state University under the guidance of Jo Anne and Rich Vacca. Maryann is a board member of the Association of Literacy Educators and Researchers (ALER) and the author of numerous articles, chapters, and instructional materials on Literacy education, including the co-authored books The Literacy Coach's Companion and Independent Reading. She teaches graduate courses in literacy education and provides professional development workshops to teachers and literacy coaches.

Ok book

So this book was required for my class,and it covers the basic content literacy issues with no surprises. The pages are super-flimsy and I really wish I had gone with the earlier, cheaper edition--I don't know what exactly was updated, but $100 is pretty steep for a run-of-the-mill book.

Overpriced POC

A stupidly expensive book. $130 to buy the hardcopy, $78 to rent, and $98 for the Kindle version! Are you kidding me? This is a required book for an online class and it is absurd how much textbook companies are trying to charge future teachers. Practices like this are the reason why education in this country is going down the s***ter.

Great book

I bought this book for a content area reading glass and I will admit I was not looking forward to it at all. I usually avoid reading my texts for classes if it can be at all helped. However this book is different. It is well written and provides an array of excellent, pertinent information for a budding teacher like myself. I can even see in a few years down the road I will want to revisit the content and refresh myself. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants more information about teaching reading in their content area.

Another great read in romantic suspense

Storm brewing. Lightning. Thunder. A cloned baby?

With the first sentence, the first scene, Delores Fossen catapults the reader into Delaney Nash's world. She's afraid for her miracle baby. Is he in danger and is he the son of her sworn enemy, Ryan McCall?

`Peekaboo Baby' is a story that could become true in today's fast-paced technology and advances in science. Delaney visits Ryan on that stormy day when her doctor won't divulge anything when she tells him New Hope Clinic is under investigation for unethical practices. After that, they are involved in several near-fatal "accidents".

Before Delaney and Ryan can even think about the sexual attraction they have for each other, they have to "race against time" to figure out where the danger is coming from: the doctor, the director of the clinic, or even, Delaney's father, who has no love for Ryan McCall.

`Peekaboo Baby' is another great read from an author we've come to expect the best in romantic suspense.

A must read!

This is one of the best books I've read in a while. I've read over 300 books this year, and this book is by far one of the BEST! The emotions were high, the action is intense, and the passion brewing between Delaney, and Ryan was hot and steamy. The plot was very good, and the suspense of the story unfolding kept me very interested.

Sample from chapter 1 - No amount of strength could have stopped the tears that sprang to her eyes. Hot tears that burned against the cool rain speckling her lashes. Delaney fought the tears, and lost. The fear and dread were overwhelming. Dr. Keys or someone else at the clinic might have used her son as a guinea pig, and those experiments might have irreversible long term effects.

Sample from chapter 3 - Ryan heard Delaney scream. A sound of terror that he was sure he would remember for the rest of his life. If he had a rest of his life, that is. As he swerved to the right, it occurred to him that this could turn out to be a fatal accident. He knew what was out there. A deep, six foot wide irrigation ditch. Almost certainly overflowing with rainwater. A second later, Ryan took out the almost certainly. Even though he tried to keep the car on the road, he wasn't successful. They hut the narrow shoulder of soggy, slick gravel, skidded and then plunged right into the watery ditch.

Sample from chapter 6 - Ryan hadn't even been aware that he was holding his breath until he became light headed. Actually, he began to get downright dizzy. Since collapsing would put a serious dent in the stalwart, rock hard image he wanted to portray, he drew in a long breath. And he waited. Simply put, it was entirely possible that Delaney held his future and his heart in her hands.

Sample from chapter 7 - "Do you understand that I can't lose my son again?" He asked. Definitely not a thunderous accusation. No anger whatsoever. But there was pain. Delaney could feel it. In him. In her. It was thick and real, unreachable, and yet it was there. Right there. And she had a sickening fear that it would get worse before this was over. There was also an equally sickening feeling that this would never be over.

A VERY LIVELY MYSTERY! - CLONEING?

Definitely a four plus stars.

I still haven't figured out how they can clone an asexual baby.

No egg, no sperm just DNA?

Whoa, Delaney Nash is informed that there has been some DNA manipulation done on her son. On a very wet night she confronts Dr. Bryson Keyes about the truth of her child and learns that possibly Ryan McCall is the biological father.

Ryan McCall hates the wet and stormy nights as they remind him of his great lose of his wife and son, Adam. He is not in the mood to receive a visit from the daughter of his antagonist, Richard Nash.

He is holding himself in check in listening to Delaney's request to see a picture of his son.

Suddenly accidents start to happen that involve both Delaney and Ryan so that he diplomatically insists that she and her son, Patrick move into his estate. Better security.

Who is trying to kill him and Delaney? Her father, maybe? Dr. Bryson Keyes? But Keyes has disappeared. Dr. Emmett Montgomery? He is the head of the New Hope fertility clinic. Does he want to cover up what happened to Delaney's donor embryo?

What happened to Spears records?

The mystery deepens and agravates the hormonal drive of a man afraid to love and a woman wanting love. Could they find a way to have a family?
