About the Author
Matthias Otto is Professor of Analytical Chemistry at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg in Germany. He was born in Dresden (Germany) and did all his studies at the University of Leipzig. In 1984 he moved to Freiberg (Germany) as a lecturer and was appointed full Professor there in 1987. Since that time he has taught almost all aspects of Analytical Chemistry mainly within the curricula of chemistry, applied sciences and geoecology and organizes courses in basic and advanced chemometrics. He is author and editor of successful textbooks in analytical chemistry.

Seems to have a good amount of information

Seems to have a good amount of information; however, it can be a little hard to understand at times. When I was new to chemometrics it confused me a good amount, especially with my limitied stats/math background. Now after being in the field for a little bit, it is a good book to refer back to

Informative but broad

An informative book that covers a wide range of topics in chemometrics. About a third of the book deals with statistics, giving a good review to signal processing, ANOVA, t-tests, etc. For someone that wanted a book dealing only with chemometrics, it is disappointing to find a big portion of the book dedicated to basic statistics. A lot of topics are covered but not all in much detail. For example, there are 3 pages on SIMCA, 4 pages on PCR and PLS. There are more details when you get into the sections on neural networks and fuzzy theory. The examples are OK but not always easy to follow if you are not familiar with a particular method because steps are skipped. This book is a great overview of chemometrics-useful to refresh memories or get new ideas for data treatment- but needs to be supplemented with additional resources to learn more any one particular method. Fortunately the author includes a "general reading" section at the end of each chapter which provides references for books with more details.

Fountas and Pinnell are two of the most recognized experts of early literacy learning and teaching in the US. Literacy Beginnings reads like a prequel to all their previous books; if you are a stakeholder in early childhood education- teacher or administrator- this book is a must read. The early childhood community has long been awaiting these gurus to weigh in on the heavily debated and often misinterpreted best practices in early literacy instruction. This book will leave many early childhood teachers feeling triumphant as the authors openly denounce the outdated "Letter of the Week" method as well as worksheets. The name of the authors is why I initially decided to pay $40 for this book. I should say upfront I am glad I did not wait for used copies to become available. I had next step questions & assessment questions I hoped reading over the summer would clear up to strengthen my know-how the for next school year. I reflected on my observations, lesson plan notes and pictures from last school year and Literacy Beginnings provides "hooks" that took my thinking to the next level. The authors being former classroom teachers anticipated those questions that come up when teachers plan and included them in the chapters. Since I was not with my teaching team, I read the questions in the chapters and spoke into a tape recorder or jotted down my response. When I returned to the material I was able to connect what I knew to what I wanted to know with the chapter titles, pictures of children and examples of work done by the children. The first chapter is basic but necessary to make sure I was on the same page in terms of theory and what it looks like in a busy classroom. I hope this review helps another teacher. I am new at this. I have worked in pre-k for 6 years and I was sort of shaky about why I did certain things with certain kids if I did not make a note. This resource helps me feel good about last semester and gives me firm steps to take me into next year.

Handbook for Needed Help

As an Early Childhood Special Education professional, I now consult with and provide professional development for Early Childhood professionals in public school and community based programs. SCRIBBLE SCRABBLE: BECAUSE PREWRITING IS LITERACY, TOO and HIGGELTY PIGGELTY BUMBLE BEE, WON'T YOU LEARN YOUR NAME WITH ME have been growing topics in recent years. There have been scant publications with strong, experiential examples and suggestions, especially regarding beginning recognizing of one's name and name writing. During my last workshop, the first since acquiring this book, the book was sent around the room for each to examine. They loved it!!!!! The teachers were enthusiastic about the information I shared from the text and their personal book examination. Many left saying they'd go back to their sites to ask that this be bought for them. Thank you, authors Fountas and Pinnell, you have filled a long standing void in our field.

Good For Romance Fans

I'm not totally sure how to review this book. It was a pretty quick read, with a good amount of action and lots of romance. It probably just wasn't the book I was in the mood for, or expected it to be.

The main problem of this book, in my opinion, is its main focus on relationships. I'm the type of person who wants lots of action and excitement in books, not a teenager wondering what she should do with her boyfriend, especially in a book centered around missions and "Talents". Don't get me wrong - I'm a huuuuge fan of romance - in fact, most of the time it is my guilty pleasure! (I am a hormonal teenager after all.) There were lots of sweet moments, but again, it just wasn't what I was looking for.

As for characters, I found that they were just "okay". Each character had distinct strengths and weaknesses, although I found that most of the characters fell kind of flat. And for those of you who are sick of love triangles, this book is not for you.

The up side is that there was a good amount of action and magical-power-ness (erm. Not a word, but still) I loved learning about "Cryptos" and various Talents that TOXIC trained, as well as the Hunters and various missions they had to carry out. The missions Talia, Henry, and Erik had to carry out were also filled with suspense and action, as well as, ahem, magical-power-ness. The amount of politics was also actually a plus for me - it includes some aspects of today that are certainly realistic enough to continue on towards the future. My only complaint concerning this is probably also concerning my personal tastes -

I found that the mystery and mysterious "bad things" involving TOXIC to be very straightforward and simple to figure out. Personally, I found that the fact that Talia was unable to figure this out even after the second book (I took a look at Book 3 - whoops...) a little unrealistic and stupid on Talia's part. But again, this may just be because of my personal tastes.

Overall, I would recommend this book to people who are looking for more of a romance than an action read, or something along the lines of a romance-focused book, with bits of action (well, basically a paranormal romance). Otherwise, if you're looking for more Talent action or an espionage type novel, I suggest you pass on Talented.

I love Talented! :)

Here's a bit of the synopsis...
"Talia Lyons is Talented. Born after a nuclear spill, she is part of a new generation that possesses special abilities; Talia can read the minds of others and manipulate their thoughts. Whether Morphers, Light Manipulators or Telekinetics, the Talented are taught to control their abilities under the protective eye of the government- to use their Talents for good. But all Talia wants is revenge."

I don't really read dystopian books, but I find myself enjoying them more & more when I read them, & this one is no exception.

The book is staged in a world much like ours, but where politics are much different (and not explained all that much), & some children grow up with a wealth of different "talents". This book strangely reminds me of a short story I wrote as a kid, where all the kids have magical abilities, including the one Talia Lyons (the main character in Talented) has, the ability to not only read people's thoughts, but manipulate them as well.

The only thing I wasn't crazy about, was there are quite a few storylines in the book that are rather predictable, at least to me, but it didn't make the book any more enjoyable or fun to read. It is a young adult book, after all. I can't wait to read the next book.

There are some minor typos, words missing or written in the wrong order, but nothing major. I usually won't read books if they aren't edited well, but this one only has a few & they don't occur (or at least I didn't see any) until the latter half of the book.

Deceptive premise and trite love triangle

I read Talented as part of a GoodReads group. It's marketed as a science fiction intrigue but the main focus is a love triangle. My review will be split into five categories: plot, characters, world building, polish, and overall. Be warned that there may be spoilers but I will do my best to avoid them.

1. Plot

The start is good: an attack on Elite Headquarters that turns out to be a mere hazing to the pledge hunters carried out by the full fledged hunters. Its dramatic and exciting and it pulled me in. The next scene is a tender moment for Natalia (the protagonist) and Donavon (her boyfriend). This is also good because it transitions nicely from the reveal and allows for teasing from her teammates, setting up a sibling-like dynamic with them.

The first seven chapters are great. There's swift character develop, plenty of non-intrusive world building, some romance between Natalia and Donavon, and comedy relief from Erik. The next seven chapters drag. There is no more world building, Natalia's relationship with Donavon takes up more screen time, and a lot of nothing goes on before the first mission begins.

The first mission itself wasn't bad. A new team with a pledge team member isn't going to get the most exciting mission. This is realistic and reasonable; a good choice. Erik's actions at the end are surprising and provide a Chekhov's gun for later use.

It's after the first mission that I have issues with this book. The plot dissolves into relationship drama and anything involving The Coalition ( the bad guys) slips into the background. Their next missions aren't developed in the slightest. 'went off without a hitch' is their entirety. It is at this point that the reader will notice the lack of a driving conflict.

The Coalition is scantly developed: anti-talented group that took over seven states in the backstory. There's nothing else about them. The Agency, for its world building, is sparse about its activities. Hunters 'hunt' information and people but what kind of information is ambiguous and what kind of people is implied to be protestors. Though this DOES serve a purpose in the plot it doesn't help the lack of direction in this area which contributes to the over exposure of the relationship drama. The following chapters see this trend continue; hunter missions becomes subordinated to set up more relationship conflict. I feel Miss. Davis was bored by the stable Natalia/Donavon and exploited it for conflict.

Chapter twenty four is a breath of fresh air. It has a detailed mission with suspense and hints at a dark side of The Agency. However, as soon as the mission is over, the relationship conflict resumes dominance. It's like the start except Natalia is cuddling with someone besides Donavon.

The final arc I really like.

For starters the stakes are high: it's a mission that determines whether or Natalia can graduate from the hunter academy and become a full fledged hunter. Since she is a telepaths and telepaths don't normally become hunters her reputation and that of her team captain and her adoptive father/boss are riding on her performing well.

There's plenty of detail in her actions and what she has to do to succeed. She makes mistakes but is able to improvise. She feels guilt over using mind manipulation. There's suspense and a clash with the Big Bad of the Coalition, Mr. Crane. It has the excitement of a climax but it doesn't resolve anything. I would have liked to see Natalia go back to Elite Headquarters for her graduation because that was how the book started; her starting her pledge year.

2. Characters

Like the plot, the characters start off great. Natalia is a Nice Girl who takes her missions seriously but not obsessively and makes time for non-hunter related things like dates with Donavon. Eric is established as a funny charmer who girls swoon over and Henri as their Reasonable Authority Figure captain. Later, Penny is brought in as a quirky sociable friend for Natalia and works well as her foil. Like the plot, it sours.

Natalia comes off as schizophrenic because in one scene she's 100 percent focused on being a hunter and avenging her parents and then in the next she's pining after Erik or feeling guilty about pinning after Erik because her boyfriend is Donavon.

Erik shifts from being a funny charmer to a jealous angst guy that clashes with Donavon. At the start he goes to the city every other night for a one night stand and then after the first mission he's serious about Natalia and no mention of him looking for chicks is ever made again.

Henri is pushed to the sidelines because he doesn't have relationship trouble. Penny's purpose (until the climax) is reduced to teasing/pushing Natalia toward Erik. Donavon goes from a Nice Guy to a jerkass to borderline evil.

From chapter seventeen to twenty four the sole focus is a love triangle of Erik/Natalia/Donavon and triggered by Erik bandaging the wounds Natalia received on the first mission. She's lived with him for an extended period of time and yet suddenly she's distracted by his eyes and chest, etc. I wouldn't mind if the conflict weren't so generic. Donavon is her childhood friend that she feels safe with and Erik is a ladykiller that excites her with good looks. It's 'comfortable vs thrilling'.

3. World Building

This part is my favorite. Miss. Davis obviously put a lot of thought in this world and how it would work. Entire chapters early on are dedicated to explaining the source of Talents or how The Agency works or the origin of The Coalition. Best of all, the exposition is slotted into its own, brief, chapters; no 'as you know' between Natalia and someone else.

My personal favorite is the Mandatory Testing Act, more broadly known in fiction as a 'Superhuman Registration Act'. Unlike many examples this one has been in effect for one hundred years and become a fundamental part of society.

However, there is one problem. The origin of talents is explained by nuclear waste leaking into oceans and soil and thereby mutating it, yet scientists in the same chapter claim the can't find a mutation that could cause talents. Unless the true origin of talents or finding the specific mutation is a plot point then there is a contradiction in her premise.

4. Polish

The book looks unpolished. Words are missing semi-frequently. Commas are overused. Sentence structure is bland and could use trimming.

5. Overall

After completing the book I feel Miss Davis wanted to write a romance but wanted to rope in a Periphery Demographic by including super powers and CIA-like missions. There's nothing wrong with that but you have to deliver. About 80 percent of the story is Natalia's relationship problems. Only three missions receive any development and the first two are completed in pages. Romance might like it but everyone else should stay far away.

A penetrating look at Italian Motorcycles of the classic era

Before the Japanese decided to take over the motorcycle business, England and Italy ruled the roost, with the Italians leading the way in terms of race wins, style and innovation.

This book covers the field in a comprehensive and most knowledgeable manner.

When I saw my old 1960's Moto Rumi Junior in this book, I knew I had to have it, and I must say, I have savored every single page.

A must have for every serious motorcycle enthusiast.

Esstential Reading For Any Motorcycle Enthusiast

Mick Walker's "Italian Racing Motorcycles" is one of a series of books that covers the evolution of the road racing motorcycle by the nation of which the machine originates from. As the title indicates, this book discusses the motorcycles of Italy.

What I enjoy most about this series of books is the format. I find them easy to read, and a valuable resource to add to my library due to the abundance of information that Mick has compiled on a multitude of manufacturers. From Aermacchi to Rumi, everything you could ever wish to know about Italian road racing motorcycles is covered. While the Ducati section is large due to that marque's racing history, Mick does an incredible job at showcasing some of the manufacturers that exploded onto the road racing scene with much promise, only to be cast aside for one reason or another as time went by. The racing efforts of manufacturers such as Morbidelli, Bianchi, and Paton are covered in-depth. Mick does a fantastic job at not only talking about the machines, but also of talking about the riders, the engineers, and the mechanics that all helped to achieve some of the most incredible goals that anyone could dream of in the realm of motorcycle road racing. The pictures that Mick provides to accompany his writing are spectacular as well.

I also own a copy of Mick's "European Racing Motorcycles", and I am setting my sights on more of his work. You cannot go wrong with any book in this series. These books can be hard to get, but once you have your hands on a copy, you'll never let it go. I highly recommend this title to any motorcycle and road racing enthusiast.

I was asked to write an 'honest review' of this book, so here it is.

This is a clear and very complete book on how to use essential oils to combat, the particularly unpleasant skin complaint of Psoriasis.

The introduction to both the essential and carrier oils are simply written, but, as I have said, very clear and complete.

Then there is a multitude of different recipes, or mixes based on the different essential oils.

What is very reasonable, is the range of different possibilities offered, as a therapist, (psychologist, psychotherapist), I am well aware that for any given complaint, the 'one size fits all', attitude rarely works. It is important to be able to offer alternatives, if the first attempt at treatment, draws a blank.

Having all these different possibilities, as much as possible, gives great hope that one of them will be the cure for you.

This is a very handy book for anyone suffering from psoriasis. Sadly, there is no consistent cure for this disorder, but using special oils can certainly alleviate the symptoms. The book recommends several types of essential oils -- they are "essential" because they still carry remnants of plant's fragrance from which they are derived -- that are easy to make or order online. A very informative and helpful book for all those people who are suffering from with psoriasis. With no permanent solution for this disease, this book give you some hope by using some special oils we can cure the psoriasis. And you will also get to know that how to use essentials oils and use it on your skin. with whole mind and focus on the treatment of specific diseases, this book is much worthy and beneficial. must read book.

About the Author

John Stredwick is a writer and consultant in human resources, specialising in reward and flexible working practices. He spent 25 years as an HR practitioner, including experience in publishing, shipbuilding and building services with 11 years as Head of HR at Everest Double Glazing. From 1992 until 2010, he was Senior Lecturer and Head of CIPD studies at Bedfordshire University. He has taught in Singapore and Dubai, and was Visiting Professor at the London campus of Websters University.
