This book is valuable for its interpretation of alternative approaches to traditional statistical inferences... The second edition is noticeably updated and clearly replaces the earlier 1999 publication... Just opening it gives a clear road map with key points in italics and key terms in boldface. The links to statistical websites are gems. This textbook supplement is ideal for advanced students, practitioners, and faculty in the social sciences. Summing Up: Highly recommended.

About the Author
Rae R. Newton is Professor of Sociology Emeritus at California State University, Fullerton. He recently joined the faculty of the School of Psychology at Fielding Graduate University where he serves as a research consultant and statistical advisor to doctoral students and faculty. He received his PhD in sociology from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and completed postdoctoral training in mental health measurement at Indiana University. His primary interests include longitudinal modeling of outcomes for high risk youth and foster care populations, family violence and statistics education. He is author, with Kjell Erik Rudestam, of Your Statistical Consultant: Answers to Your Data Analysis Questions, now in its second edition and numerous articles in professional journals on topics including family violence, child maltreatment, and measurement. In semi-retirement he enjoys traveling with his wife in their RV and surfing throughout Mexico and Central America.
Kjell Erik Rudestam is Professor of Psychology at Fielding Graduate University, Santa Barbara, California, where he served as Associate Dean of Academic Affairs for many years. He was previously a psychology professor at York University, Toronto, and Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, after receiving his PhD in Psychology (Clinical) from the University of Oregon. He is the author of Your Statistical Consultant: Answers to Your Data Analysis Questions, 2nd edition (also with Rae R. Newton), Handbook of Online Learning, 2nd edition (with Judith Schoenholtz-Read), and eight other books, as well as numerous articles in professional journals on topics including suicide, psychotherapy, and family and organizational systems. He is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association (Division 12), a Diplomate of the American Board of Examiners in Professional
Psychology (Clinical), a Diplomate of the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress, and holds an Honorary Doctorate of Science from The Professional School of Psychology.

Excellent, Unusual

This is an excellent book authored by two of my colleagues at the Fielding Graduate University. It offers a straightforward yet sage, anti-cookbook approach to statistics. It isn't a stats textbook, but rather it contains the sort of pragmatic advice you might get from a good statistics consultant. It doesn't tell you what to do so much as provide the information you need to dig out of holes and do a first-rate analysis.
Of special value is the unusual, informative and well-balanced discussion of limitations and controversies surrounding various statistical approaches. For instance, there has been considerable and longstanding controversy swirling around the use of the null hypothesis significance testing. Most undergraduate, graduate and postgraduates who engage in hypothesis testing are unaware of these controversies, in part because they are rarely covered in popular statistics textbooks. The authors explain the controversy in a masterful chapter titled "Rethinking Traditional Paradigms: Power, Effect Size, and Hypothesis Testing Alternatives." I can imagine embattled researchers consulting this book while arm-wrestling over statistical issues with others, including dissertation committee members and journal reviewers.
The book contains excellent and informative Illustrations. For instance, I think figures 12.1 and 12.2 from a chapter titled "The Big Picture" are especially important because they capture the commonalities among a wide variety of statistical techniques.
